Looks very much like a Grosbeak in the body. Maybe he is and just has some weird "marking deformity"?

I thought of that but it is indeed smaller than the average Grosbeak Still may be one though |

I thought it might be a Grosbeak in the molting stage, but its colors are closer to a finch. It does look too small though even for a female. |

is it pretty small (sparrow-sized)? maybe it's a molting goldfinch ?

Looking back through this thread, I didn't see any pix of these guys, the Rodney Dangerfield of birds in the Maritimes. Here's one from my yard today......

I guess they are just too common to post pics of them. :D I like to watch them though. They definately have a personality about them.
