We've broken the record for the most snow ever in October, and we're on track for the coldest October on record, certainly for daytime highs (little chance of recovery during the week ahead). Precipitation amounts have exceeded 190 mm, which I believe places in the top 3 wettest of all time.

How many days-with-snow does Gander have so far this October? Wonder what the record is? Will be an interesting stat to see come Saturday.

October 2009 featured an abundance of gloomy weather around here. :ph43r:

The monthly mean temperature came in just a tenth of a degree above the record for the coldest October ever (which was 3.8°C in 1984 & 1986). However the average daily maximum temperature is the coldest on record, almost a full degree colder than the previous record (which was 7.4°C in 1984 & 1986).

The monthly precipitation total was the second highest on record (the highest being 220.0 mm in 2003). The snowfall total destroyed the old record (42.4 cm in 1940). We also set a record for the most days of measurable precipitation and most days of measurable rainfall. We were one day short of setting a record for the most days of measurable snowfall.

29 out 31 days in October featured at least a trace of precipitation; including 14 days with at least a trace of snowfall.

Here are the stats from Gander Int'l Airport:

Mean Temp: 3.9°C (normal 5.8°C)
Average Maximum: 6.5°C (normal 9.5°C)
Average Minimum: 1.3°C (normal 2.0°C)

Highest Temperature: 17.0°C (1st)
Lowest Temperature: -3.9°C (30th)

Num highs >= 10°C: 5 (normal 13)
Num lows <= 0°C: 13 (normal 9)

Total rainfall: 140.4 mm (normal 98.0 mm)
Total snowfall: 68.8 cm (normal 12.8 cm)
Total precip: 209.2 mm (normal 112.4 mm)

Num days with measurable rain: 26 (normal 18)
Num days with measurable snow: 10 (normal 5)
Num days with measurable pcpn: 27 (normal 20)

Depth of snow on ground at end of month: 2 cm (normal 1 cm)

Farewell, October. Farewell. :wacko:
