End

The GEM keeps precip liquid for most of NS until Thursday once the low develops offshore and draws in colder air. NB gets the snow Tuesday night / Wednesday.

Hazey Skies - March 12, 2012 10:13 PM (GMT)
Meh. I'm not worried. It will trend north. Just liquid here which is fine with me. With any luck we'll get a warm push and just have showery mild conditions. I'm in spring mode now. Today was gorgeous out. Northern and eastern NS can have the snow and ice. Regardless looks like things warm in time for the weekend.

shaneomac1234 - March 12, 2012 10:49 PM (GMT)
Weird why the weather network has nothing about it lol

Eastcoaster - March 13, 2012 10:07 AM (GMT)
Interesting little system.. will be tricky with the surface low riding right over my house.. Wouldn't take much of a shift south or north to change my overall weather with this one.

GBNova - March 13, 2012 12:07 PM (GMT)
Doesn't look like much snow if any for HRM southward. Messy over northern NS, PEI and NB though.

rkssbay - March 13, 2012 01:26 PM (GMT)
Looks like some significant icing possible for most areas of N and E NS
Freezing Rain Warnings flying.....
10cm MAX before the changeover probably in some places.....

cfogarty - March 13, 2012 02:00 PM (GMT)
Should the thread state ""Tues night / Wednesday system" (?)

dfog - March 13, 2012 02:09 PM (GMT)
I have family visiting here from Australia, and they're driving back to Montréal tomorrow to catch a flight Thursday....(NB doesn't look too pleasant) :o

cfogarty - March 13, 2012 04:26 PM (GMT)
Weird track/evolution for this low:

shaneomac1234 - March 13, 2012 04:35 PM (GMT)
A question Chris do you think there be extensions to the warning for snowfall my forecast states 10-15cm on EC .. and local blowing snow or do you think that will change with the next update

rkssbay - March 13, 2012 05:38 PM (GMT)
Looks like a complex little system
Appears it is going to hang out in the area well into Thursday!
It was sunny and +9 with NO wind here all morning, right up until about 1400

rkssbay - March 14, 2012 01:27 AM (GMT)
This thread is eerily quiet lol

when the forecast is this, it's not much to get excited about, just a cold, damp raw maritime day

TonightMainly cloudy. Periods of rain beginning this evening. Amount 5 mm. Fog patches developing this evening. Wind southeast 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming northeast 20 gusting to 40 overnight. Low plus 2. WednesdayPeriods of rain. Amount 2 to 4 mm. Fog patches dissipating in the morning. Wind northeast 20 km/h gusting to 40. High plus 4. Wednesday nightPeriods of rain becoming mixed with snow after midnight. Rainfall amount 2 to 4 mm. Wind northeast 20 km/h gusting to 40. Low plus 1.

Relliott - March 14, 2012 02:05 AM (GMT)
Getting some freezing rain here right now, the temp is -0.1°c. Rain gauge is showing 2.0 mm so far this evening.

newseditor - March 14, 2012 02:14 AM (GMT)
Freezing rain in Amherst for the last hour or so. Could be an icy night, hopefully not a repeat of the 09 ice storm.

rkssbay - March 14, 2012 02:39 AM (GMT)
Moderate freezing rain and lots of ice pellets mixed in since 2300. Temp -1*c. Winds NE gusting to 50km/hr. Pretty raw out. Windchill -7*c.

rkssbay - March 14, 2012 02:44 AM (GMT)
Its now 90% ice pellets. And coming down heavy! Pounding off the metal roof!

Don't knock this system - it may end up being quite an icy mess for some.

Here's an idea of the freezing rain threat area. With the cold high locked in place to the north and the slow-moving nature of the low/front, some areas may get a heavy ice build-up. March is the season for this kind of thing too. Warnings are out. There is also a decent threat for heavy icing 50 km north of the band shown in this model output - model often underestimates northward extent of freezing rain - so Fredericton, Moncton, Amherst, New Glasgow - all in decent threat area too.

Yeah Ryan, looks like you're within the icing risk area! Here in Halifax we'll probably be just on the warm side of it (correction: looks like we'll be in the just-below-zero region too!). I'll post an update soon.

cfogarty - March 14, 2012 04:05 AM (GMT)
Latest GEM REG run shows freezing rain along similar zone as previous run. Got a touch of freezing here in Dartmouth - temp just above zero. A bit of ice on top of recently-used BBQ LOL. Damn cold and raw outside when you get these airmasses user posted image

Oldskibum - March 14, 2012 11:44 AM (GMT)
We had a couple of cm of ice pellets topped off by a mm or two of freezing rain. Temps close to -2°C overnight. Roads are treacherous.

Relliott - March 14, 2012 12:01 PM (GMT)
The long range forecast is currently looking better after tomorrow, looks like some decent weather on the way. I hope it holds!

GBNova - March 14, 2012 01:04 PM (GMT)
Coating of ice in Lr. Sackville this AM. Not thick, maybe 2mm max.

plummybob - March 14, 2012 01:42 PM (GMT)
Just checked some progged model soundings are there is a good chance for thundershowers for say for Halifax area and points west today. Tri-county area in the coming hour or 2 then eventually western mainland this afternoon and early evening.

Actually, given the surface temps and timing of the convection, cannot rule out TSZR - a rare occurance for NS.

I saw that in this mornings forecast, I thought it might have been a mis-print :D
I see the possibility is in the 11am forecast as well. It would be neat to have thunder shower here in March, that doesn't happen too often

Relliott - March 14, 2012 03:40 PM (GMT)
Speaking of thunder, I see there are currently 3 active cells off NS, south of Yarmouth.

Wow. Nice line of convection comming into Yarmouth county. Lightning detection shows frequent strikes. I hope that line can hold together in to HRM. Doubtful but we'll see. Kinda early for this but it's getting me into chase mood. Hope it will be a good spring/summer for storms again this year.

rkssbay - March 14, 2012 03:43 PM (GMT)
Slightly below 0. Overcast. Freezing drizzle here. Supposed to hit +2 but temp has been steady all day. Everything coated in ice. Gusty.

Thanks for the heads-up. Wasn't looking for this. Nice activity came into Yarmouth Co. earlier. Nothing in the forecast for HRM, but of course I wouldn't rule it out.

rkssbay - March 14, 2012 05:42 PM (GMT)
SWS out for NE NS and CB for the mess tonight and tomorrow. Snow/Blowing Snow, Ice Pellets, Freezing Rain, Rain. Fun!
